5 Ways to Increase Khushoo in Your Salah

Struggling to focus in salah? Here are 5 proven ways from the Sunnah to increase khushoo and transform your prayer.

We all want khushoo in our prayer — that deep focus and humility where the world falls away and it's just you and Allah. But how do we actually get there?

Khushoo happens when you empty your heart and focus only on the prayer, preferring it over everything else. Here are five practical ways to build it.

1. Remind Yourself Who You're About to Meet

Before you start praying, pause. Contemplate this:

وَلَهُ الْكِبْرِيَاءُ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ

"And His alone is the Majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise."

— Al-Jathiyah 45:37

You are about to stand before the Creator of everything. Let that reality settle before you say Allahu Akbar.

2. Remember Death

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Remember death in your prayer, for the man who remembers death during his prayer is bound to pray properly — and pray the prayer of a man who does not think he will pray another prayer."

— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2863

What if this was your last salah? How differently would you pray?

3. Look at the Place of Sujud

Keep your eyes fixed on where your forehead will touch the ground. Don't look around. The Prophet ﷺ told us:

"Allah faces the slave while he is in prayer and keeps facing him as long as he does not turn. If the slave turns, Allah turns away from him."

— Sunan Abi Dawud 909

Every glance away is a moment you lose Allah's attention.

4. Move at a Measured Pace

Don't rush. Give each ruku, each sujud, each standing a reasonable amount of time. The Prophet ﷺ called the one who rushes through prayer "the worst type of thief — the one who steals from his prayer."

When asked how someone steals from prayer, he said: "By not completing the ruku and sujud properly."

5. Eliminate Distractions Before You Start

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Prayer should not be performed when the food has been presented, nor when one is fighting the urge to relieve oneself."

— Sahih Muslim 560

If you're hungry, eat first. If you need the bathroom, go first. Remove the distraction before it removes your khushoo.

Your Action Step

Pick one of these five to focus on for the next week. Don't try all five at once. Master one, then add the next. Start with #1 — pause before Allahu Akbar and remember Who you're standing before.
